Os sistemas biométricos são um conjunto de tecnologias digitais que utilizam os traços físicos das pessoas como um meio de autenticação. Existem diversos mecanismos biométricos que são utilizados para identificar de forma inequívoca uma pessoa e que utilizam diferentes características, tais como as impressões digitais, a íris do olho, a imagem facial, o reconhecimento da voz, entre outros. Os sistemas de reconhecimento biométrico oferecem um sistema de identificação mais seguro que as senhas tradicionais.

Pesquisas e desenvolvimentos da NEC resultaram em algoritmos de identificação mais avançados e de maior precisão disponíveis atualmente no mercado.

A NEC desenvolveu suas soluções AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) por mais de 30 anos, orientadas a resolver as necessidades das agências do Governo e das Forças de Segurança. Atualmente, o uso dessas tecnologias foi estendido para o desenvolvimento de aplicações não criminalísticas, mas mantendo o nível de segurança e precisão das bibliotecas AFIS da NEC.
